How a lot of Reddit memes became the best armor in Runescape

Old School Runescape, the proudly antiquated version of Runescape that still looks and plays like the match I snapped innumerable hours into when I actually should've been studying, is obtaining a raid. Its next raid, as it occurs: The Theatre of Blood. A fantastic raid buy RuneScape gold needs good rewards, so when the Theatre of Blood was announced late last year, players were anxious to find out exactly what clearing the multi-man challenge could make them. Jagex reacted with Justicar armor, a new best-in-slot armor place (above). There was one little problem: players absolutely hated it.

In fact, they hated it so much , for months, the Old School community dogpiled the armor on the 2007scape subreddit and memed it into hell and back. They memed onto it so hard that Jagex is currently completely altering the armor's design. And not only that, the artist behind the Justicar armor,"Mod West," is utilizing designs submitted and voted on by players. Almost all of Old School Runescape's updates go through player polls, but this is the first time that the suit of armor has been forged in a fire of memes.

The irony is that while gamers hated the'closing' armor revealed earlier this season, they adored the prototypes shown while the raid was announced. Initially, the Justicar armor was bulkier and part of a trio of armor sets, West tells me, but as the Theatre of Blood went from obscure concept to real material, the armor shifted with it. Participants said there was sufficient DPS gear but not enough tank equipment, so it was narrowed down to just one armor set. And when they were only going to use one group, Jagex figured they might also create a new one based on the armor worn with the raid's huge poor.

"We thought changing it up a bit made sense," West says,"but players were not quite on board with the first proposal we shared stream. And then, well, Reddit went wild."

The memes came out hard and fast. Some players said it was too much like existing armor, including armor from Runescape 3, the newer, mainline version of Runescape. Most demanded a return to the model designs. Others thought the new armor did not seem tanky enough and liberally provided some choices, with some calling for a more drastic redesign.

It got so bad that some players started to seriously believe that a meme the updated armor was by a different artist, and that the artist who made the RS gold prototypes had abandoned Jagex. But something amazing happened. Even as memes blotted out sunlight, slowly but certainly serious suggestions began to shine through. It started with primitive Photoshop jobs, but shortly proper illustrations and fan art started to crop up. Players rallied around the idea of a milder, blessed armor set motivated by the Runescape god Saradomin, so that they went back into West's prototype layouts and made some adjustments.

Inspired from the memes and motivated by elements of West's designs and other players' ideas, legend_arts created a hybrid armor layout so good it not only silenced the memes, it got the attention of West himself.
